After 17 years at the heart of Manitoba’s arts and cultural community, Douglas Riske retired as Executive Director of The Manitoba Arts Council, December 31, 2015.
“Douglas skillfully, wisely and passionately guided the Manitoba Arts Council for the past years,” said MAC Chair Keith Bellamy. “I want to thank him for his tremendous contribution not only to MAC but to the quality of life in Manitoba and to the Canadian arts and cultural community.”
Prior to moving to Winnipeg, he was ED of the Yukon Arts Centre, Whitehorse for two years.
His 40 years in the arts and culture sector included work as an actor, stage manager, director, artistic director, producer, consultant, teacher and cultural manager.
He co-founded Alberta Theatre Projects, Calgary and was AD of Sunshine Theatre plus New Bastion Theatre in Victoria, Assistant Director at the Stratford Festival, and directed at Stage West Dinner Theatres plus the Manitoba Theatre Centre.
Douglas was also active in various industry associations including Canadian Actors Equity Association and ACTRA, the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and was the founding chair of the Canadian Public Arts Funders. He received the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal 1977 and the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Confederation.
The opportunity to lead and learn at the Manitoba Arts Council, one of the ten provincial funding agencies in Canada, was a once-in-a-lifetime professional opportunity: Managed a complex organization through significant change including: orientation of 15 new Board members; creation of innovative funding program designed for major arts organizations; growth of the Artist in the Schools program; improved communications and consultation processes; implementation of modern grants management system.
And has remained involved on the Board of the Canadian Network for Arts and Learning/CNAL for 11 years.
Currently work as a consultant specializing in Board and staff development, strategic planning, programming, community relationships, support systems for organizations and government relations.
